What is π Day?

π(PI) day is an unoffiicial holiday to celebrate the mathmatical number π which is approximately 3.14 so it is celebrated on March 14th (3-14).  π is the number used to find the circumference of (distance around) a circle (the formula for this is π r2 ).  Many math classes around the world have special activities for π day.

Interesting facts about π Day Things to do to celebrate π day
  • It is also Albert Einsteins birthday
  • On March 14, 2004 Daniel Tammet recited from memory 22,514 decimals of π.
  • The first π Day celebration was held at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988
  • Using computers 1 million decimals of π have been calculated with more being added every day
  • Bake some square pies (because π r2 )
  • Have a π eating contest with real pies.
  • Have a π party.
  • Have a pizza π party.
